Ask your embassy about a replacement
Use the issuing government’s official website to find its embassy or consulate in Japan. Explain any imminent flight. Ask what identity evidence and photographs to bring, how to apply, and whether an emergency document is suitable for your route.
For U.S. citizens, the State Department explains the in-person replacement process and the possibility of an emergency passport when a regular one cannot be issued in time. Missing supporting documents should be discussed with consular staff.
For British citizens, GOV.UK’s urgent-travel guidance explains emergency travel document eligibility and journey restrictions. It is not a general substitute for an ordinary passport.
There is no reliable single processing time for all nationalities. Confirm your appointment and document timing directly, then discuss any necessary itinerary change with the airline.
File the Japanese lost-property report
The National Police Agency’s reporting guidance explains reporting a loss. Give the last time and place you definitely had the passport, even if the exact loss location is unknown. Keep the reference and the name of the office handling it.
Tokyo police specifically advise checking with your embassy whether a certificate is needed. If it is, ask the police which office can issue the required document. A report reference and a formal certificate are not interchangeable.

Check the hotel, railway, taxi or airport
Use the actual operator’s official lost-property channel. For a hotel, include the branch, booking name and stay dates. For a train, provide the operator, route, time and any seat details. For a taxi, use the company on the receipt or ride app. At an airport, explain whether you last saw it on the aircraft or in the terminal.
