Before you call

Sotetsu runs through services with several other railways, so an item lost on one of its trains may be held elsewhere. On the day of the loss, ask at the station you used; from 14:00 the next day the Futamatagawa centre in Yokohama can check the item against what it holds. The centre answers 045-391-5207 from 11:00 to 20:00 most days and to 18:00 on Wednesdays, and collection with someone else's help needs a letter of authorisation and ID.

Call script: Japanese, romaji and English

Replace every ◯ with your own date, number and name. These are example lines, not a promise from the office: whether the item is found, and the rules for pickup or shipping, are decided by the desk that holds it.

Common questions

Can I call in English?

Call to confirm; items on through services may also be held by JR, Tokyu, Tokyo Metro, Toei or Tobu. If the desk cannot handle the call in English, use the Japanese script below and ask them to speak slowly; language support can change, so confirm the current situation on the official page.

When is it easiest to get through?

Call right after the line opens at 11:00, or in the hour before it closes at 18:00. Lunchtime (12:00–13:00) is often unanswered. Hours may be announced separately over the New Year period.

What happens after a week?

There is no single national rule: the office decides how long it keeps an item and when it is passed to the police or another desk. Sotetsu runs through services with several other railways, so an item may be held by the partner company. Until 14:00 the day after the loss items are still being moved and sorted, and the operator says the centre can only check against the actual item from 14:00. If the item has not been found yet, ask which desk is holding it now, for a reference number, and how long it will be kept.

Can someone collect or ship it for me?

The office decides whether a proxy can collect the item and which ID or authorization is required. If you have already left Japan, ask whether it can be shipped within Japan or overseas, and confirm the conditions and cost with the office. The collection script below has the questions to ask.

What is Native Call?

You can speak English, Mandarin, or Cantonese. The person in Japan hears Japanese, and their Japanese reply is translated back into your selected language.

  1. 1

Open the app and enter a supported Japanese number. International calling is built in; no Japan SIM needed.

  2. 2

Take turns speaking. Translation delay varies with the network, phone route and utterance length.

  3. 3

Repeat names, dates, times and outstanding steps before hanging up. A connected call does not prove the request was completed.
