Cheaper than carrier roaming
Verizon TravelPass / AT&T International Day Pass charge $10/day flat. NativeCall charges per minute and includes the translation.
No SIM swap before flying
Place the call from your couch in California to a sushi counter in Ginza. The booking confirms before you board.
No 'call rejected' issues
Some Japanese landlines auto-decline US-prefixed (+1) numbers. NativeCall routes through Japan-side carrier so the call goes through.
When you'd call Japan from home
- Pre-trip restaurant bookings. The phone-only sushi counters take reservations 30 days ahead at 9 AM Tokyo time — that's 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET the night before. Set an alarm.
- Ryokan special requests. Email goes unanswered for 3–5 days; a 4-minute call resolves the dietary restriction or futon-vs-bed question instantly.
- Lost-and-found follow-up. Left your camera at the JR ticket counter? Check the operator’s official multilingual phone, chat, or form support first. If a Japanese phone call is needed, have your journey and item details ready.
- Family in Japan. Calling Japanese relatives — grandparents, in-laws, or family running a business — without burning $10/day on TravelPass for a 30-minute weekly call.

How it works
- 1
Open the app and dial the number
Enter a supported Japanese phone number. The app places the call over your internet connection; you do not need a Japan SIM. The recipient answers a normal phone call without installing an app. Some special numbers and routes are not supported.
- 2
Speak your language, the other side hears Japanese
Speak English, Mandarin or Cantonese. The recipient hears Japanese, and their reply is translated back. Take turns using short sentences; delay varies with the network, phone route and utterance length.
- 3
Confirm the result before hanging up
Repeat the date, time, name and agreed details. A booking still depends on availability and the recipient’s policies. Review the bilingual transcript in the app to check what was said.
Common questions
How does NativeCall place the call from the US?
The outbound call runs from our infrastructure, not your phone's cellular line. You connect to our app over your normal internet (home Wi-Fi, AT&T / Verizon / T-Mobile data), and we connect to the Japanese number through licensed VoIP routing. From the Japanese side it looks like a regular international phone call.
What does it cost compared to my carrier's international plan?
Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile international add-ons run $5–$10 per day or $0.30–$1+ per minute to call Japan. NativeCall's per-minute pricing is significantly cheaper than carrier rates AND includes the live translation. Before buying credits, you can make a free demo call to a pretend Japanese business in the app to hear how it works.
Will the Japanese person see a US number on caller ID?
They see a Japan-region routing number that connects through our VoIP carrier. This keeps the call free of US-international-call rejection that some Japanese landlines do (a known annoyance — many SoftBank business lines auto-decline +1 numbers).
Time-zone reminder — when should I call?
Japan runs one time zone, JST (UTC+9), all year and has no daylight saving time, so the gap changes with the US clock: 13 hours ahead of US Eastern and 16 ahead of US Pacific while the US is on daylight time, and 14 and 17 hours ahead once the US returns to standard time. Convert before you dial — an 8 PM call from New York lands at 9 AM the next day in Tokyo — and call inside the venue's own published contact hours rather than assuming a national pattern.
Does this work the same from Canada and Mexico?
Yes. Same infrastructure, same per-minute rates. We currently market this page to US visitors because they're the largest cohort of inbound-Japan travelers — but the product is identical for callers from Canada, Mexico, the UK, Australia, Singapore, anywhere.
Will my AT&T / Verizon number even work?
It doesn't matter — the app uses your internet connection, not your cell radio. Wi-Fi alone is enough. Even an iPad with no SIM can place the call via NativeCall.
