Important: the Tokyo Taxi Center, the official industry body, does not handle lost property enquiries, so calling it will not find your item. The correct process: (1) with a receipt or app record, call the taxi company directly; (2) if you do not know the company, file a lost item report with the police and search the Metropolitan Police found property system; (3) if you remember it was a radio group vehicle, call Nihon Kotsu radio on 050-3173-9200 (weekdays 09:00-17:00), Toto Taxi radio on 03-3987-1455 (weekdays 09:00-17:00) or EM radio on 03-3545-3501 (daily 05:00-26:00).
Before you call
- The Tokyo Taxi Center is not a lost property desk and its own page says it does not handle enquiries, so do not spend time calling it.
- The receipt is the strongest clue: it carries the company name, vehicle number and ride time, and if you booked through an app such as GO the ride history serves as the receipt, so call that company directly.
- The three radio group numbers are Nihon Kotsu radio on 050-3173-9200 (weekdays 09:00-17:00), Toto Taxi radio on 03-3987-1455 (weekdays 09:00-17:00) and EM radio on 03-3545-3501 (daily 05:00-26:00).
- If you have no idea which company it was, file a lost item report at the nearest police box or station and search the Metropolitan Police found property system online; drivers usually hand items in to the police.
- When you call, start with the date, time and the places you got in and out, for example around 21:00 on 5 July from Shinjuku East Exit to Asakusa, because the company checks this against its dispatch records.
Searching for Tokyo taxi lost property often leads to the Tokyo Taxi Center, but that body states on its own page that it does not handle lost property enquiries, so calling it wastes a step. The first move is to find the receipt or the ride history in your booking app: both carry the company name and vehicle number, so you can call that company directly. If you have no idea which company it was, file a lost item report with the police and search the Metropolitan Police found property system online, and if you remember the vehicle belonged to a radio group, use the group's desk instead.
Call script: Japanese, romaji and English
Replace every ◯ with your own date, number and name. These are example lines, not a promise from the office: whether the item is found, and the rules for pickup or shipping, are decided by the desk that holds it.
First inquiry: date, place and a description of the item

Common questions
Can I call in English?
Mainly Japanese; the companies do not list multilingual phone desks. If the desk cannot handle the call in English, use the Japanese script below and ask them to speak slowly; language support can change, so confirm the current situation on the official page.
When is it easiest to get through?
Weekday mornings are easiest for the radio group desks; the EM radio line opens at 05:00 every day Nihon Kotsu and Toto radio groups answer on weekdays; EM radio answers daily 05:00-26:00.
What happens after a week?
There is no single national rule: the office decides how long it keeps an item and when it is passed to the police or another desk. If the item has not been found yet, ask which desk is holding it now, for a reference number, and how long it will be kept.
Can someone collect or ship it for me?
The office decides whether a proxy can collect the item and which ID or authorization is required. If you have already left Japan, ask whether it can be shipped within Japan or overseas, and confirm the conditions and cost with the office. The collection script below has the questions to ask.
What is Native Call?
You can speak English, Mandarin, or Cantonese. The person in Japan hears Japanese, and their Japanese reply is translated back into your selected language.
