Can Google Translate translate a real phone call to Japan?
Not as a normal two-way phone-call translator. Google Translate is still useful for Japan travel, but the phone-call problem is different: you need to dial a real Japanese number and have both sides translated inside the call.

Short answer
The Google Translate app can translate spoken conversations, listening mode, and face-to-face travel speech. It does not act like a phone carrier that sits between you and a Japanese landline or mobile number. If you call a restaurant, hotel, clinic, courier, or support desk in Japan, Google Translate will not automatically translate both sides of that phone call.

If you already have a supported Pixel and the right language pair, test that first. If you are on iPhone, need Mandarin or Cantonese to Japanese, want prepaid credits instead of a subscription, or need the call to feel like a normal Japan phone-number workflow, use Native Call.
